O Rio Colorado, controlado por barragens, voltou a levar água ao delta mexicano em uma cheia artificial iniciada após alertas científicos de que mais de 90% das florestas e áreas úmidas do baixo curso desapareceram. O pulso durou oito semanas, teve pico e resultados rápidos, porém é pequeno e temporário
Em 2014, o Rio Colorado recebeu um “pulso” artificial depois que milhões de litros de água foram liberados da barragem de Glen Canyon em direção ao México, num experimento que buscou recriar cheias naturais quase ausentes havia décadas. A liberação durou oito semanas e, nos primeiros dias, alcançou pico de 1270 m³ por segundo, cerca de três a quatro vezes o fluxo normal.
Em 2017, um acordo entre Estados Unidos e México passou a garantir liberações de água até 2026, mas com uma limitação crucial: o volume previsto representa apenas 1% a 2% do que o delta recebia antes da década de 1930, o que torna a restauração possível, porém incompleta.

Foi exatamente isso que os cientistas observaram em 2014, quando a cheia artificial conseguiu transportar sedimentos e reativar bancos de areia no trecho que segue rumo ao México.

Por que cientistas disseram que o delta do Rio Colorado virou areia
O pulso nasceu de um diagnóstico duro. Os cientistas confirmaram que mais de 90% das florestas e áreas úmidas do trecho inferior do Rio Colorado haviam desaparecido, áreas que sustentaram peixes, aves e comunidades por milhares de anos.
Com esse colapso, o delta antes verde se transformou em areia clara, poeira salina e árvores mortas.
O impacto aparece em cadeia. No Delta do México, a base menciona desaparecimento de áreas úmidas maduras e extinção de espécies nativas de peixes; também aponta danos sociais, com comunidades tradicionais reduzidas e modos de vida enfraquecidos à medida que a água some.
O que mudou em poucas semanas após a água voltar a correr
Os resultados reportados foram diretos e mensuráveis. Com o pulso, a umidade do solo aumentou quase 30% e vegetação ribeirinha considerada morta brotou novamente.
Poucas semanas depois, câmeras ecológicas registraram mais aves nativas, e algumas espécies de peixes voltaram a trechos abandonados desde os anos 1990.
Outro efeito veio pelo trabalho de campo no delta: uma coalizão de organizações, comunidades indígenas e voluntários passou a replantar florestas ribeirinhas, restaurar corredores verdes e monitorar aves migratórias.

Há um detalhe técnico que define o sucesso de qualquer pulso no Rio Colorado: sedimento no timing certo.
A base aponta o rio Paria como a principal fonte, responsável por 80% a 90% dos sedimentos que alimentam trechos como Marble Canyon e Grand Canyon.
Sem esse sedimento chegando no momento exato, as cheias artificiais perdem força para recriar bancos de areia e habitats.
É por isso que o pulso é apresentado como eficaz, mas frágil: depende de sincronização hidrológica e de condições que o sistema, hoje, nem sempre consegue oferecer.

Mesmo com sinais reais de recuperação, a base insiste no limite estrutural: o acordo assinado em 2017 mantém liberações até 2026, mas em volume pequeno, apenas 1% a 2% do que o delta recebia antes da década de 1930.
Em outras palavras, o pulso ajuda a “acordar” o delta, mas não repõe a água histórica que sustentava uma recuperação plena do Rio Colorado no México.

Too late to recover the Colorado River delta. Too many competing interests for a resource that was over allocated even before dams were built, not to mention the fact that states served by the Colorado River Compact continue to grow in population despite the obvious limitations of water resources. The policies of the current administration also don’t **** well for the delta. It has already killed the bilateral Columbia River Compact with Canada and shows no interest in negotiating a replacement. It seems like headlines and Venezuelan oil are more important than a stable environment and economy by those dependent on what the benefits the Colorado River provides. Can’t remember the author’s name but would recommend reading “River Be Dammed” for a detailed look at how the river has been misused for decades.
So true, the several decade impact has nothing to do with past leadership, overestimation, or the current Democrat state legislators in California whom is the largest recipient of the water but rather than developing desalination technology or contracting Israel whom have a massive desalination infrastructure set up that’s growing daily instead they’d rather spend 26 billion on a train that’s not ran a single mile but no it’s not those idiots fault, it’s all Trump’s fault!! Are you aware of the environmental and energy costs of desalination? It’s well done in some places like Chile where solar power is being used in desalination it becomes a viable option though the current administration rather spend money stealing oil than investing in self sufficiency through the use and innovation in renewable energy.
